CLERK OF COURTS

Two magistrates have been appointed by the court to hear routine matters so that the judges’ time is spent on the most serious charges and trials. Magistrates are experienced lawyers who hear cases referred by the judges. Their authority is more limited and subject to judicial review. Bailiffs are not lawyers and have various duties including assisting the judges and magistrates in running the courtrooms efficiently, serving court documents, and handling paperwork in conjunction with the probation officer. Probation officers oversee the progress of people sentenced for crimes, look out for the needs of victims, and implement community service projects.

Scheduling of trials and court appearances is done by court employees in the case management office.

Court hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each weekday although the judges may begin early or finish later depending on particular cases.

All Court personnel are available to answer your questions regarding court procedure. Judges and Magistrates are prohibited from discussing your case with you outside of the courtroom and court personnel cannot give legal advice. If you should have questions regarding procedure, please call the Bailiff of the Judge/Magistrate you last appeared before or to whom your case is assigned. If you have problems reaching the Bailiff, contact the Court Administrator.
